Bhaichung Bhutia

Bhaichung Bhutia is a former Indian footballer. Dubbed the ‘Sikkimese Sniper’, Bhutia is known for his superb accuracy. He has been awarded the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.

1993 - At 16, he left school to join East Bengal in Kolkata to start his pro-football career

1995 - Scored on international debut against Uzbekistan in the 1996 Nehru Cup, becoming India’s youngest goalscorer at 19; joined JCT Phagwara. He was the top scorer when they won the NFL in 1996–97

1996 - Named India’s ‘Footballer of the Year’

1998 - Returned to East Bengal and scored the first hat-trick in the derby against Mohun Bagan, received the Arjuna Award

1999 - Joined FC Bury in England on a three-year contract

2003 - Scored 12 goals as East Bengal won the NFL in the 2003–04 season

2008 - Named India’s ‘Footballer of the Year’ for his stellar show in the AFC Challenge Cup, India qualified for the 2011 AFC Cup after winning the tournament, awarded Padma Shri

2011 - Retired from international football

2015 - Officially retired from football after a short stint with East Bengal
